Welcome to Religion Answers. What would you like to know?

A person is considered a Jew if either their mother was a Jew, or they have formally converted to Judaism. In some branches of Judaism, a person can be considered Jewish if their father but not their mother was Jewish. It also varies between branches of Judaism whether someone born Jewish but no longer following the Jewish religion is nonetheless considered Jewish.
