Religion Wiki

Shalom Simon,

Yes I am aware of it. Actually the basic POV of this wiki is the Multiple Point of View. I have lived in Israel for some times and have learned a lot about the different religions and sadly also noticed the hatred between eachother. Religion is not that wants to predict hate but ment as a community where we can learn from eachother. About wikiislam you are right. You are free with addapting articles that are predicting hate against islam.

oh and by the way thank you for correcting the english in this wiki. I am not a native english editor and and the other native english moderators/administratora are sadly not active anymore.

Concerning religion wiki. Apart I am adding my own articles. I like to gather as much as possible information about different kind of religions. Most wiki's are licensed under GFDL or CC-BY-SA and there are even more resources available.

I think it is really important to understand eachothers religion. for example during my time in Israel I have noticed that there was a lot of misunderstanding between the Islamic and Jewish Israelians.

I will also take a look at that muslimwiki.com and might take as well some articles from it.

If you need help with something concerning the wiki just ask.

Regards --Friso Yoyon Schaap(Talk) • (Religion Wiki Administrator) 12:40, January 4, 2010 (UTC)

Concerning that article you commented I am totally agree with you. I have removed it. Sadly the last 2 months I had to remove a lot of simular articles. --Friso Yoyon Schaap(Talk) • (Religion Wiki Administrator) 09:22, January 5, 2010 (UTC)

response

Folllowing the recent change to the look of this site, the text on my Userpage has become invisible. One more thing, I'd like to add user boxes for theo ther languages I know. French-4, Spanish-4, Esperanto-3 and Catalan-3. I tried to do it but I kept getting it wrong.Simon Peter Hughes 14:47, January 6, 2010 (UTC)

I have no problems with reading your userpage. Everything is clear to me. Perhaps the wikia stuff is busy with mantainance. If it still happens contact User:Angela she is taken part of the wikia staff and also keeping an eye on our wiki. Concerning the Userboxes. I haven't important everything yet from wikipedia. It is a lot I have only installed the English, Dutch, Arab and Hebrew but I will work on it asap. --Friso Yoyon Schaap(Talk) • (Religion Wiki Administrator) 18:08, January 6, 2010 (UTC)

question

I noticed that you are giving some good feedback and suggestions. I am also happy with your skills as English teacher. I am going this year back to Israel and I might no be always able to guard the wiki because I am planning volunteering in the Palestinian areas as a correspondent for a Dutch organisation. The internet connection in the Westbank is not always stable. I was thinking about to give someone the same admin permissions as me. Besides me there are 3 other people with admin rights but they are all 3 inactive. I have contacted the wikia staff about it for demoting them. As an admin you are able to block vandals like IP and user bans, reverting pages and altering the MediaWiki and special pages. I wonder if you are interested. For example you are also able for renaming an article. Like the last suggestion you made to me you can do it yourself with admin rights.

admin rights

Ok I have demoted 2 inactive admins and granted you full admin rights --Friso Yoyon Schaap(Talk) • (Religion Wiki Administrator) 23:23, January 18, 2010 (UTC)

Constructed religion topic

This topic is created by the founder (inactive and has left the wiki) from the English wiki. However I noticed that a lot of anonymous users are taking advantage of this option by creating 'hate and fun religions' There are only a few contributors who made some really good articles which i would rather like to classified under a personal point of view or philosophy from personal perspective. I wander what do you think what we should do with this topic. last year i had to delete a lot of "constructed" religions.--Friso Yoyon Schaap(Talk) • (Religion Wiki Administrator) 23:23, January 18, 2010 (UTC)

I have the same thoughts about it. We are getting often anonymous edits with the most silly things which i can not taken seriously. I am also aware we have registered users who made some really good articles from there own 'philosophy' point of view. a good example is Mirianism created by User:Ano-User These kind of articles should stay in the religionwiki but maybe we should rename this catagory. Besides me there is another admin left User:Rev Bem . I will ask him to respond on this topic too. I made this discussion with him before but lately he isn't really active concerning contribution of articles.

A couple of months ago I had the following discussion with him:

What is the purpose ofthis topic. It has no use. I can understand that we don't want to look like a copy from the official wikipedia but this topic doesn't make sense. Friso Yoyon SchaapReligstaff (talk) 13:13, November 12, 2009 (UTC) Just check the list and read it. I cant take most of the articles serious. Most of the writers are "one article posters" and some of them are really disturbing or even insulting. Friso Yoyon SchaapReligstaff (talk) 13:19, November 12, 2009 (UTC)

?? This page is the soul of this wiki. 90% of this wiki's edits stem from this concept, this wiki allows anyone to create their own religion and share it with the world.
If you don't get this page, then perhaps this wiki is not for you.
Rev Bem 03:30, November 13, 2009 (UTC)
disturbing articles about porn actors and masturbating I think that is actually not even allowed conforming the Wikia use of terms. I will add too all these constructed religions the constructed religion templated we used before. By the way 90 percent of this wiki edits are made with this concept? I don't think so. I ve just checked the total edits to this wikif it seems I have the most edits in this wiki which are more then 50 percent on this wiki -- Friso Yoyon SchaapReligstaff (talk) 21:13, December 22, 2009 (UTC)

Personally I dont think he will like it if you we are gonna delete it but lets see how he will respond now you are involved in this debate too

Ok i might have a solution for those constructed religions. To compromize the creators we can transfer all those articles to another wiki. http://createyourreligion.wikia.com --Friso Yoyon Schaap(Talk) • (Religion Wiki Administrator) 11:39, January 21, 2010 (UTC)

Bot account

I am setting up a Bot Account. I am doing a lot of work on my account what has nothing to do with the articles. For example I am working a lot in the CSS Stylesheets and Templates. These edits are spamming the article history on the frontpage and the sidemenu. I would like asking Wikia for a bot flag. With a bot flag these edits are not visible. Before asking wikia I thought i would discuss it first with you.

deleting constructed religions

All the constructed religions are moved to the new wiki. I was only able to move the constructed religions wich were caterogized in the proper section. There are still uncatorigized articles in our database. Sadly these are hard to find. Like a needle in a haystack.

I have started with deleting articles in our wiki. You are free with helping deleting these articles too.

Personal philosophies

I think we need to say, "You are welcome to create articles in which you express your own personal beliefs and religious philosophies, however we ask that these articles be serious and honest. Do not create such pages merely in order to cause offense to followers of other religions. Do not make false claims about your philosophy, do not claim that it has hundreds or thousands of years of tradition or millions of followers around the world if you can not verify those claims." When people make those claims, what they have written crosses the line from being a personal philosophy to being a mock religion.--Simon Peter Hughes 09:45, February 7, 2010 (UTC)

Mod privileges given to Granpa

Shalom Simon,

I have given Moderator Privileges to User:Granpa. He has done a lot of edit the last month. He is also a large contributor concerning religion in Wikipedia. He has proposed to import his wikipedia articles in this Wiki.

importing articles is a lot of work because I have to add the wikipedia template manually to every single article. I have given granpa mod permission so he can import the articles himself. I will work the nextfew weeks on the wikipedia content with removing red lines, broken links and adding templates and images.

I will trust granpa with the privileges he got from me. As administrator we are still able to demote if neccessary. But I hope for the best. Regards ----Friso Yoyon Schaap(Talk) • (Religion Wiki Administrator) 20:08, February 18, 2010 (UTC)

deletion log

I noticed you have deleted the post from user:bhweaver about his church article. Probably you have deleted because the article appears like an advertisement action. I think this is a tricky subject and we should setup some guidelines about this. Like people are allowed for starting articles about there congregation but they should provide us with some more explaining material such like images and content and not just a website link. In wikipedia is that allowed for example. What is your opinion about this? ----Friso Yoyon Schaap(Talk) • (Religion Wiki Administrator) 12:00, February 24, 2010 (UTC)

Impersonation and Copyright Issues

Simon,

My name is Geoffrey Plourde. I am a senior administrator with Conservapedia.com. I'm writing today on the behalf of both myself and multiple other administrators who have been impersonated by someone or some people who have created accounts on Religion wiki in our conservapedia usernames. Ordinarily this wouldn't be a problem, but the individuals took it a step further and used the accounts to upload some of our Conservapedia contributions to Religion wiki.

We do not use CC BY SA or GFDL, which means that a license exception template needs to be put on all copied pages. Our copyright policy is located at http://conservapedia.com/Conservapedia:Copyright

Some of the accounts in question can be found at:

Thank you for your time and I can be reached by email at geo.plrd at yahoo.com.

importing articles with full history

I'm having trouble importing articles with full history. It said the file was bigger than the max allowed (It was 20 MB). As a result I am having to import articles one at a time which is a pain. And even then it sometimes fails. Is there a way around this? Am I not supposed to import full history? Granpa 13:03, August 23, 2010 (UTC)

User:Rktect

You should probably keep an eye on User:Rktect (69.39.110.136). I imported his articles (starting with Stations of the Exodus) from wikipedia and invited him to work on them. His ideas are original research and definitely fringe but still interesting enough that they are worth having as long as he keeps his ideas to his own articles with Template:opinion on them. I even consolidated all his articles into Stations list for him so this would be easier. The trouble is that he states (in our email correspondence) that he isnt satisfied with doing that. He wants to rewrite all our articles about the exodus stations (like Etham, Pi-hahiroth, & Marah (Bible) which certainly dont have Template:opinion on them). I have already reverted an edit to Kibroth Hattaavah. I fear that he might make trouble. (he was banned from wikipedia for similar behavior). I blame myself. I should probably have known better. Granpa 11:03, August 26, 2010 (UTC)

I explained to him that if his edits are accepted at wikipedia then they will be accepted here too. Otherwise he will have to keep his ideas in his own article (with template:opinion) But he will not compromise. He is being very unreasonable. Granpa 16:13, August 26, 2010 (UTC)

I would like what I contribute to be logically consistant and not tagged fringe without first looking at the fact that no
other theory of the Exodus has survived its peer review. I don't think that is unreasonable, and I'm trying to
communicate with grandpa and let him put the material in, only noting that it should be consistant.
One station Tara was linked to an article on Terah, Abrahams father and talked about placing a station at Harran
Another on a site at Horab went off on a speculation about a non existant station Taberah and in the
same paragraph pointed out that this speculation relied heavily on the traditional location of Mount Sinai and that
the traditional location of Mt Sinai has been rejected by the majority of traditional scholars and theologians
That is not a logically consistant statement
Up until the recent archaeology exposing the Red Sea trade of Thebes Red Sea port Elim with Elat which is
located at the head of the Gulf of Aqaba, people had looked for an Exodus from the delta. Gradually that has
been changing. There is no evidence of such an Exodus. People have accepted the fact that Egypt garrisoned
its borders and waterholes and that no large body of people including women and children could cross the Sinai
making 21 miles a day without food and water to reach Elat from the delta. They have accepted the fact that
Thebes was the capital of Egypt in the 18th dynasty when the Exodus dates itself.
The main drawback of no evidence of an Exodus has since the 1980's been answered by archaeological digs
on both sideds of the Red Sea at Quasir and at Timnah showing such evidence for the first dozen stations
of the Exodus.
The idea of a list of stations of the Exodus is essentially to pin down a route for the remaining stations by
adjacency, much as a surveyor would lay out the metes and bounds of a property. Many have been known
for at least a century and have found their way into Bible commentaries the BAR and other such established reviews.
Since it wouldn't make much sense for a surveyor to start at a point of beginning, lay out a distance and
course from corner to corner and then suddenly jump to a point on the opposite side of the property, it makes
sense to point out there are stations which are in Egypt and stations which are not. Of the stations which are
not in Egypt all of them are in Edom, mostly following its metes and bounds along its borders with the
exception of one station which is in Sinai where it abuts the Gulf of Aqaba near Elat.
In order to get from Egypt to Edom a crossing of the Red Sea is involved from Elim to Elat.
A cluster of stations is at Mount Horab at Elat.
Leaving Elat the stations of the Exodus follow the Metes and bounds of Edom Northwest through Kadesh Barnea
to the brook of Egypt at Gaza, thence eastward back to Dibon in Moab and south through Petra and Mount Hor
to close back on Elat. I provided a map to show this. Since there is a days march between stations and the rate
of march is limited, the hypothesis is certainly testable.

red links redirecting to wikipedia

I asked at wikia community forum whether it would be possible to make red links automatically redirect to wikipedia. here is the link. They didnt seem to think that it would ever be possible to do that. Still it might be done even now through javascript. Then it wouldnt be necessary to go through and remove them one by one. Any link to an article that religion-wiki doesnt have would simply go automatically to wikipedia. Ideally we would put something on the page itself telling the computer which wiki it was imported from and red links would automatically redirect to that wiki. But that may just be a pipe dream. Granpa 14:38, September 4, 2010 (UTC)

It's a nice idea, espeecially since I realise now that I'm never going to have time to remove all the red links. I'd really like to see blue links going to articles on this site and another colour going to Wikipedia. In the mean time, I'll just keep trying to improve the look of this site one article at a time and I won't hold my breath!Simon Peter Hughes 05:19, September 5, 2010 (UTC)

It works. (Thanks to Devnull69)
Just add the following to your personal javascript page (or better still to the sitewide javascript page)
var theBrokenLinks = document.evaluate('//a[contains(@title,"(page does not exist)")]',document.body,null,6,null);
for (i=0;i<theBrokenLinks.snapshotLength;i++){
  var theMatch = theBrokenLinks.snapshotItem(i).href.match(/\?title=(.*)&action/)[1];
  theBrokenLinks.snapshotItem(i).href = 'http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/'+theMatch;}
Granpa 18:12, September 19, 2010 (UTC)
Since redlinks will no longer go to the create new article page you will have to use the 'Create a new page' link in the lefthand sidepanel. Granpa 04:01, September 20, 2010 (UTC)

About using different languages

Hi Simon,

I apologize that I didn't realize that I have to use only English in the Religion wiki, as I do see other languages in Catagories (prefixed with a language tag) and also in the Portal page (Additional Languages). I'm a little confused whether this is an all-English wiki or whether it supports multiple language versions? Are there instructions or policies regarding the use of languages? I apologize as I'm new to the wiki.

Best regards,

But I got an email message about the old location which I see you have a problem with, the discussion below about it not looking right. Why don't you just delete the page at my previous location, and why do I get messages about my old location? My religion has been moved to a new location and it works fine there, so I cannot understand why I get messages about the old location. Granpa 06:24, October 12, 2010 (UTC)

I learned to read in books, so I want all pages in internet to have a warm very light gray background and use Times New Roman text size 14, so it looks like in a paper book. Fortunately my browser has a user mode in which I use that setting. If a page looks bad in that setting I can click a button and see what the web designer thinks the page should look like. If it still looks strange I use two buttons in my Opera which shows the page in Internet Explorer or Firefox. I see in Internet Explorer that my religion at my new location has a very light gray background, which is okay. Roger491127 14:50, October 12, 2010 (UTC)

I have tried the new look now, it makes a mess out of my site, with a lot of things along the left side of the page and a big white space to the right of it. It is the content which should be in a separate column to the left of the actual site content which is placed above the site content instead of in a separate column. People have to scroll down a whole page to get to the real content, so I have changed back to one of the older layouts. The Monobook look best because then there are tabs at the top, Article, Discussion, etc.. like in wikipedia. That makes it easy for people to click on the Discussion tab to write comments or questions there instead of changing the content of the article. I have done the testing in Internet Explorer. Roger491127 16:11, October 12, 2010 (UTC)

Church of Reality

Hi Simon,

I am an English language teacher like yourself, and have travelled the world with this profession before settling down as a translator (working with English, French, German, Italian and Spanish) in sunny Spain.

I try to be a realist in my daily life and I define myself as a Realist by religious conviction. I thought it such a shame when I saw that my religion was devalued when the Wikipedia term that had been religion for around five years was suddenly "demoted" to just "website".

It's okay, I'm used to being laughed at because of my religious convictions, it's just that I would like other people to feel free to express their religious views without someone overriding them and saying "your religion is nothing more than a..." whatever.

Trusting that you will continue to work to the benefit of this incredible source of information,

css to fix new look

I dont like the way the new look wastes space
so I have changed my css page to make the content fill my display and to use small font.
It is against wikia rules to do this sitewide but there is no rule that forbids individuals from doing it.
If you are interested then you can look at my css page here:
User:Granpa/wikia.css
Its set to my display size of 1366 pixels.
You would have to change a couple of things to fit your own display size.
These are clearly marked in the comments
If you have any questions I will be glad to help you with it.

I also highly recommend firefox extensions 'hide caption titlebar plus' and 'personal menu'.
they free up even more space by eliminating the caption bar and the menu bar.
I've had them installed for weeks and I havent seen any drawbacks yet.

I may have messed up.

I found a very useful category Category:Lists_of_deities and it only had 3 articles so I imported the rest from wikipedia.

After importing it gave the message "All revisions were previously imported" next to every single article.

But when I checked the histories of the articles most had no history at all except that import.

I found one article that did have a history and I reverted it to your last edit.

eliminate left margin

I found a neat little trick to use screen space more efficiently. if you add

.WikiaHeader, .WikiaPage { margin-left: 0; }

to your personal css page then it eliminates the left margin.

It doesnt eliminate the right margin but that space isnt totally wasted since large tables can expand into that space.

no word yet on whether this can be added to site wide css.

If you want them to be red then add

a.new {

}

to your personal css page.
Or you can change your preferences so that a red question mark is put after the link.
Its under preferences > appearance > Format broken links like this (alternative: like this?).
Strangely though you have to uncheck it to get the red question mark.
Granpa 09:33, August 12, 2011 (UTC)

Wait, what color do you want the redirecting links to be for regular nonlogged in users?
Granpa 09:38, August 12, 2011 (UTC)
Could just make them black and maybe underline them.

database dump

I downloaded a database dump on 8-13-11 to my computer and then uploaded it to mediafire.
Folder:

http://www.mediafire.com/?1nif9xsjqsvpz

file:

http://www.mediafire.com/file/g63jkco4ria4cpp/pages_current.xml.gz

Of course, wikia has its own backups but my fear isnt so much
that wikia's computer might crash but that this wiki might get taken over and vandalized.
I wanted to have a copy just in case
Granpa 19:08, August 15, 2011 (UTC)

Btw, it was 96 Mb.

Videos

I just found out about embedding videos. here is a link to the discussion at wikia. This seems like a really useful tool yet very few pages use them. Granpa 19:13, September 24, 2011 (UTC)

Sitcomlover

I blocked sitcomlover because his name appeared in the history of about 10 of the nonsense pages that I deleted yesterday. You can no longer see this history because I deleted them. I still have no idea why he editted them. He should have deleted the pages or at least blanked them. But you are right, his other edits appear to be acceptable. Not sure whats going on. Granpa 14:40, December 12, 2011 (UTC)

I could have used this yesterday:

Navigation popups

Navigation popups are finally working again. I contacted staff and they told me to import an older version of the popup. The one they use on help.wikia. Once I got the css for it it started working fine. Granpa 03:15, January 18, 2012 (UTC)

navigation popups again

I have no idea why navigation popups stopped working but I went back and followed the instructions I was originally given and now its working.

to enable navigation popups just add

importScriptURI( 'http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Lupin/popups.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript' );

to your Special:MyPage/wikia.js

I would add it to the sitewide javascript page but frankly I'm afraid to touch anything.

Bible study meeting

Hello. I am Superdadsuper an admin on bible study wiki. One of your admins has left a message for bible study wiki a while back.I am now finally answering your call and i would be happy to help with this wiki.I was also wondering if you can maybe partner with bible study wikia. I can also advertise this wiki on bible study and you can advertise bible study here.

Javascript buttons

Check out the buttons!

Gospel_harmony_based_on_Matthew#Highlighter_Buttons

And they can easily be added to any page to highlight anything one wants.

The new counter

You probably noticed the sitemeter image in the lower right corner.

Thats a counter.

Clicking on it will take you to a page showing stats for our whole wiki

We have had over 500 visitors today and each one visited an average of 4 pages before leaving.

"By Entry Pages" is especially interesting as it shows what page they first visited.

Dont overlook the links at the very bottom of the page.

Granpa (talk) 01:11, August 19, 2012 (UTC)

Ijust realized that I need to give you the password and username.
I dont think I should post it here.
How do you want me to send it to you?
Granpa (talk) 06:23, August 19, 2012 (UTC)
It's OK. I can see all the things you mentioned above without logging in.--Simon Peter Hughes (talk) 06:26, August 19, 2012 (UTC)
A large number of those 500 users appear to be bots from inktomisearch.com in sunnyvale
Granpa (talk) 08:51, August 19, 2012 (UTC)
Really? Those bots are visiting but their not adding spam or anything like that. I wonder what's going on.--Simon Peter Hughes (talk) 09:16, August 19, 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, its definitely one person. They are using netscape browser which hardly anybody uses but if you look at our stats for browsers you will see that netscape makes up 60%. So I figure 60% of our traffic is that one person in sunnyvale.

When it shows the url of the 'entry page' it drops parenthesis. This can be very confusing.
Granpa (talk) 03:50, August 20, 2012 (UTC)

Google evidently is not our friend but bing and yahoo are. Most of our viewers are being referred here by bing and yahoo but only rarely by google. I cheecked and Religion-wiki does inded show up in the Bing search results much sooner than it shows up in google.

We have at least one fan

We have at least one fan over at Wikipedia: Wikipedia:User:Garzo

Granpa (talk) 08:56, August 23, 2012 (UTC)

User:Garzo was actually one of the earliest users on this wiki. He probably put that on his Wikipedia page back when he strated editing here.Simon Peter Hughes (talk) 09:00, August 23, 2012 (UTC)
He is still visiting our wiki.
Granpa (talk) 09:11, August 23, 2012 (UTC)
Good. If you're reading this, your vicarness, you're most welcome to edit as well.--Simon Peter Hughes (talk) 09:56, August 23, 2012 (UTC)--Simon Peter Hughes (talk) 09:56, August 23, 2012 (UTC)

Coexist

The Coexist page is getting a lot of attention.

Its a stub of a page and all its links are broken.

sunday school class

from 6:15 till 6:35 pm sunday we had a sudden influx of visitors from san jose.

at first I thought it was web crawlers but I think it was probably a sunday school class.

they used different operating systems and different browsers but all had 1280 computer screens.

at least somebody is using the site.

Rename "Create your own religion"

Can we rename Create Your Own Religion to Do not create 'constructed' religions here

Granpa (talk) 12:00, October 30, 2012 (UTC)

Yes! I think that would be a great idea.--Simon Peter Hughes (talk) 12:41, October 30, 2012 (UTC)

Hello again, I recently added or readded Spiritualism, List of Bureaucrats, Administrators and Patrollers, List of Religious terminology besides editing the Portal. All have been either reverted or deleted. May I ask why?
